Understanding The Growing Process Of Daughters
When you’re the parent of a growing young woman, it can be difficult to gain insight into what she is thinking and why she responds to the world the way that she does. It’s not easy for her to figure out exactly where she belongs and who she is. It’s a process that can be conflicting, confusing, and exciting all at the same time.
When she was just a little one, things were a bit simpler. From baby cribs to little girl dresses, it was easier for you to parent her. The whole world was so brand new that you could watch her take it all in and understand her. As she started to grow up, somewhere along the line, things changed.
When did she start looking so grown up? The girls sweatshirts that used to shelter her from the wind were traded in for clothes that make her look much older than her years. It’s hard to watch her as she struggles with first crushes, trying to figure out how smart she should be without coming across too strong, and how to navigate the world as she starts to develop her very own angst.
It’s like one day you notice that she has given into to something. Her shirts for girls are more like shirts that you would expect to find on a twenty something beach bombshell and her body is suddenly looking a lot like that of someone who is well beyond her years. Her music has even changed. Long gone is the innocent pop music. It’s been replaced with some sort of angered expression of her newly developed angst.
There is no remedy for the situation. As she starts to break free from the stereotypes that she rallies against, she turns directly to another stereotype. Her flight in this world can be paved with her own certainty or it can be pitted with her own insecurity. From one day to the next you don’t know which it will be because she doesn’t know which it will be.
The world seems to have matured faster in the last ten years than in previous decades. Girls today are becoming young women earlier and their roads are harder because of it. As a parent you want to reach in and be helpful, but often she won’t let you. She can’t figure out if you’re the enemy or if you’re her rock. She doesn’t know whether to listen to her friends or her conscience.
Her struggle for her own identity will continue on and you will have to develop a bit of faith in her process. Women’s roles are undefined. This means that she can try out a wide variety of potential lives before she even turns 15. You can only be there to guide her and to love her. Respecting the fact that she is growing fast and furiously will help the two of you stay connected.
