Garage Sales Are Like Chicken Soup For The Consumer Soul

It’s a fact these days that many of us have collected a ton of stuff in our lives though most of it probably isn’t anything we actually need. Honestly, do we really need such stuff? Acting like a horde of bees flying about the hive blindly and endlessly is no way to go through life. In that regard, it’s smart to clean out the garage and clean out the consumer soul that’s clogged by all of our junk.

Generally speaking, almost anybody who was being honest would say that it’s probably the men in a family that have the most difficulty selling off something through a garage sale. They may have a treasured — though completely unused — black electric guitar they bought when they convinced themselves they were going to take lessons. Still, they’ve convinced themselves they need it, right?

Even most men would admit that the idea of putting on a garage sale every once in a while as a way of clearing out all of the junk that’s building up in a home is a good thing. Even though most of these things aren’t really needed they may still be wanted. The wife can quickly remedy much of this by making the husband participate in the sale, and she’ll also be entertained by his twinges of regret, too.

After all, it’s probably his fault that every one of the home storage shelves in the basement, the garage and in more than a few of the bedrooms that the kids used to live in prior to moving off to college are now stacked with more stuff than might be found in the fabled cave of the 40 thieves of Ali Baba fame. Making him do penance by cleaning out that cave can be a good thing for most any wife.

Still in all, it might not be a good thing to just go wild and throw away or sell off every little thing of value. This makes sense when one considers that one’s health is probably the most important possession one has. Keeping something like a Cuisinart food processor around to continue making healthful dishes is advisable unless a new processor has been obtained in the meantime, most would say.

Truthfully, almost everybody would admit that there are thousands of items in a typical home that make for good garage sale fodder though almost everybody will also admit that reasons continually crop up why they shouldn’t be sold off. Maybe that bowling ball that was used one time will come in handy someday, but that’s probably just sentimentality speaking and not clear-eyed resolution.

This isn’t to say that things of great sentimental value should be cast aside like a used up tennis ball, but it does mean that inventing reasons for keeping stuff laying around the house — when there are plenty of people out there just dying to get that stuff for whatever reason — isn’t the greatest way to go, either. So, holding an occasional garage sale can be lucrative and therapeutic, right?
